Sick

2 min read
Been pretty sick lately with some kind of bug so I haven't posted anything up in a bit.

I plan to finish a couple of commissions and then work on some more personal stuff. I'm also going to be looking for a few more under-appreciated DA artists to feature on an upcoming post. Suggestions are always welcome.

so i've noticed there are some seriously awesome artists out there who haven't gotten nearly as much recognition as they deserve. i've decided once a week i'll make a list featuring five under-appreciated artists in my journal, but i need a bit of help. if there's an artist out there who you like that you feel isn't getting the attention they deserve, please comment and drop me a link to their DA. if they have a certain piece of art you love that you feel should get more attention, a link would also be great.

thanks everyone!

basically, it's wrong. when you're profiting off of another artist's hard work or fame, it's wrong.

i came across this today and it really upset me. this person is literally just tracing and selling copyright material.

Tutorial?

2 min read
I've been thinking of putting up a tutorial or two, though I'm not sure what to focus on. Clothes, hair, skin, eyes, lineart/composition? background? flowers/trees/clouds?

rocks?

any suggestions/ideas? anything you would like a tutorial on?

Something I've noticed during my time on DA is that there is a whole lot of fan art out there. Now, there isn't anything at all wrong with this. I myself have made plenty of fan pieces, particularly being YYH characters. What bothers me, is that a vast majority of the 'fan art' out there is just traces, screen shots, and altered versions of pre-existing art. I can understand wanting to get a likeness down, but copying a drawing will get you nowhere. Tracing and altering pre-existing art is not referencing, nor does it help you expand your skills in any way.

If you really want to learn how to draw people, you have to start with the basics. Studying anatomy and realism, as dull and/or frustrating as I know that can be, is extremely important. Even stylized art, when done well, heavily relies on knowledge of anatomy. Else it will look wonky and often stiff. That includes stuff like Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, and of course anime.

I strongly encourage developing artists to learn anatomy before tackling anime or other stylized forms. Please, don't trace/alter/screen shot stuff that already exists. The artist who made that original piece put time and effort in it, and you should do them the honest favor of putting time and effort into your own art. That of course includes fan art. Imagine how upsetting it would be if you worked hard on a picture only to find out someone traced it, slapped it on DA, and is now getting credit for it.

Fan art is art made by a fan of something. Not art stolen by the fan.
